The chickens are here!

Today was the day we collected our six new hens and so far, so good.  When we arrived at Hens4Homes we were told that we didn’t have the Heritage Skylines that we’d reserved as Hens4Homes weren’t pleased with their condition and so they didn’t accept them, so they were replaced with two Bovan Silvers instead.  Having said that, one has slight brown flecks so I think it may be an Amber instead, but close enough!  They are all such pretty hens too and in great condition.  I’d thoroughly recommend Hens4Homes and wouldn’t hesitate in going back there in the future.

Despite having quite a long drive home the hens didn’t seem to be affected very much at all.  They spent a while huddled together in a corner at the back of the run, with one or two venturing out little by little.  Within a few hours they were all exploring their new surroundings, seemingly content.  We spent a while trying to tell them apart, picking out their markings and trying to find differences between them.  Once we managed that we had the task of naming them.  We didn’t have any names picked out really, as although we’d thrown some around we hadn’t settled on anything in particular.  So as we stood around the outside of the run debating on the names we finally decided on the following.  Please welcome to our family… Dolly and Tilly the Bovan Goldlines, Lola the Polar Chicken – the whiter Bovan Silver, and Gwyneth Poultry, the other Bovan Silver/Amber (we drew the line at calling another hen Reese Featherspoon), and last but not least, Mary and Fofo, the Maran Coucous, named after my two aunts who are, well, a bit cuckoo,  I mean, very beautiful just like the hens!

  1. What absolutely lovely ladies! Congratulations!

  2. How very very exciting. I am quite jealous. Looks like we won’t have chooks until late this year at the earliest. We’re getting a new letterbox sometime soon but that’s the limit of new building at the moment sadly.
